   MESOSCALE DISCUSSION 0058
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
   0734 AM CST WED FEB 04 2015

   AREAS AFFECTED...PORTIONS OF SERN NEB...SRN IA...NRN MO...FAR NERN
   KS...W-CNTRL IL

   CONCERNING...HEAVY SNOW

   VALID 041334Z - 041730Z

SUMMARY...A BAND OF SNOW WITH LOCALIZED RATES TO 1 INCH PER HOUR
WILL SPREAD EWD ACROSS PORTIONS OF THE MID-MISSOURI VALLEY TO THE
   MID-MISSISSIPPI VALLEY INTO MID-DAY.

DISCUSSION...A WELL-ESTABLISHED BAND OF SNOW -- MODERATE TO LOCALLY
HEAVY IN INTENSITY -- IS SHIFTING EWD/ESEWD ACROSS PORTIONS OF ERN
NEB INTO ADJACENT WRN IA. THIS BAND IS ASSOCIATED WITH ENHANCED H7
FRONTOGENESIS PRECEDING A MIDLEVEL SHORTWAVE IMPULSE CURRENTLY
TRAVERSING THE NRN PLAINS PER WATER VAPOR LOOPS. THE ASSOCIATED VORT
MAX IS PHASING WITH A LARGER TROUGH CURRENTLY DIGGING INTO THE UPPER
MIDWEST AND GREAT LAKES REGION. THE FLOW AROUND THE LARGER TROUGH
WILL EFFECTIVELY STEER THE VORT MAX AWAY FROM STRONGER LOW-LEVEL
BAROCLINICITY FOCUSED OVER THE HIGH PLAINS THIS MORNING. IN
TURN...THE MAGNITUDE OF FRONTOGENESIS MAY GRADUALLY LESSEN DURING
THE NEXT SEVERAL HOURS. REGARDLESS...POLAR AIR IS BECOMING
INCREASINGLY ENTRENCHED ACROSS THE REGION THROUGH A DEEP LAYER...AS
SAMPLED BY THE 12Z OAX RAOB THAT FEATURES A MODESTLY DEEP DENDRITIC
GROWTH ZONE CENTERED AROUND 580 MB. AS SUCH...SNOW-TO-LIQUID RATIOS
WILL BE SUFFICIENTLY HIGH FOR LOCALIZED INSTANCES OF SNOWFALL RATES
LOCALLY REACHING 1 INCH PER HOUR...AS SNOW SPREADS EWD FROM SERN NEB
AND FAR NERN KS TO W-CNTRL IL THROUGH MID-DAY.
