   Mesoscale Discussion 0060
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
   0521 PM CST Wed Feb 07 2018

   Areas affected...New England

   Concerning...Winter mixed precipitation

   Valid 072321Z - 080315Z

SUMMARY...Heavy snow will move from New Hampshire across southern
Maine this evening. Freezing rain will persist for 2-3 hours across
   Massachusetts into southern New Hampshire.

DISCUSSION...A progressive shortwave trough will continue to quickly
move across the Northeast this evening, with a surface low moving
from southern New England into NB/NS. Strong warm/moist advection is
occurring ahead of this wave, resulting in a extensive shield of
precipitation. Most of the area is cold enough for snow, but
southern areas from MA into coastal ME are experiencing freezing
rain as a result of a warm nose aloft.

Recent observations indicate 1"/hr snow rates are common from NH
into ME, with hourly freezing rain rates of 0.05-0.10" over MA and
southern NH. Rapid drying aloft will result in dissipating
precipitation from west to east over the next few hours, while
strong lift and the bulk of the heavy snow moves across ME and ends
   around 04Z.
