Mesoscale Discussion 0163
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0510 PM CDT Tue Mar 20 2018
Areas affected...Coastal GA/SC
Concerning...Tornado Watch 18...
Valid 202210Z - 202315Z
The severe weather threat for Tornado Watch 18 continues.
SUMMARY...An isolated severe threat across coastal Georgia/South
Carolina will shift offshore over the next hour or so. Tornado Watch
18 should be able to expire as scheduled at 23Z.
DISCUSSION...A broken band of convection that developed this
afternoon ahead of a shortwave trough across the TN Valley will
shift offshore of coastal GA/SC in the next hour or so. Until this
occurs, an isolated severe threat will continue across WW 18, as a
moist low-level airmass remains ahead of a surface cold front, and
strong mid-level winds and related effective bulk shear support
supercell structures. Large hail, damaging winds, and perhaps a
tornado remain possible in the near-term. Given the current speed of
ongoing convection, the severe threat should diminish over land
around 23Z. Therefore, WW 18 should be able to expire as scheduled.
